Lots of trouble in this world; shootings in malls, kidnapping of children, fighting among families, political confusion, wars and rumors of war, and yes, sad to say, even problems in churches. Quite recently someone spoke to my husband about their extreme sorrow and grief because of something that has just happened in their church.
The church is quite a formal denomination in which the clergy wear robes. On a recent Sunday morning, as this member and her husband sat in the service, officials of the church brought the co-pastors (a man and his wife) to the altar and physically defrocked them. Our friend has no idea of the issues involved, and is highly disturbed. So, yes, there are problems in churches. Denominations split, factions gather, and misunderstandings and disagreements are common.
Let me assure you, though, God is Not in Trouble. More than once, I’ve heard my husband, in the pulpit, tell of the convocation of a very large organization. One by one the speakers had come forward and had spoken of problems, of confusion, of disagreements. Finally, a large, elderly minister strode to the pulpit, and in a distinct, strong voice, said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brothers and Sisters, all evening long, I have heard a litany of the problems in the world, and of the problems even here in the church, and yes, of problems between some of us.”
I wasn’t there, but I imagine he paused, looked over the massive audience and finished with a flourish. “But Ladies and Gentlemen, Brothers and Sisters, let me assure you, GOD IS NOT IN TROUBLE.”
That’s my word for you today, a reassurance, a reminder, God never struggles, never is lacking for an answer, is never short of money, never staggers, nor weakens, nor falters. He is our Leader, our Guide, our Saviour, and HE IS NOT IN TROUBLE.
