The Worth of a Soul

Brandon Preston, originally uploaded by Shirley Buxton.

To ask the worth of a soul seems an unanswerable question. Not infrequently is the worth of an item determined by the price one is willing to pay, thus it is a crucial consideration to understand the message Jesus conveyed when He surrendered to death by crucifixion. By so doing, He established the human soul as having supreme worth. It was a high and terrible price He paid. No matter our color, or our creed or any other distinguishing factor, we are of inestimable and unfathomable value.

From antiquity has been the search for meaning to life and for an understanding of man’s spirit, mind and soul. In the early 1900s Dr. Duncan MacDougal, curious about the difference between the mind and the soul went so far as to instigate questionable experiments that led him to declare the soul as being measurable and as weighing 21 grams.

A few months ago, Brandon came into our fledgling church, having been invited both by Jerry and by Michael. He thought the whole thing was crazy, he told us later, but being drawn again and again by the Holy Ghost, he continued to sit in our services. A few days ago, as you see him pictured above, he stood behind our podium, and testified to the transforming power of the Holy Ghost.

What price can be placed on such a thing? How much is it worth that Brandon, a few weeks ago bound for eternal judgment and separation from God, is now a Christian, faithful to church, a witness to his friends and family, an eager student of God’s Word, and from all appearances destined to be a pillar in this local church. It’s priceless, I tell you.

I am posting this evening from Tucson, AZ where Jerry and I have traveled for a conference. I had written most of this article in Lake Havasu before we left this morning, but a traffic accident nearby knocked off the power to the RV park office, so suddenly, I had no internet connection, and could not finish until now. Just before I was abruptly halted a few hours ago, I came across this astonishing material, where…the header is:

We Want Your Soul

We Want Your Soul, Inc. (WWYS®) is a global private equity firm with nearly 250 million souls under management. WWYS® generates outstanding returns for its customers by employing cutting-edge proprietary soul extraction, containment and suppression technologies, including but not limited to genetic modification, operant conditioning, and thought control. Our firm’s history is long and celebrated, and has allowed us to evolve a global influence in all aspects and at every level of society.

You can receive a guaranteed CASH SUM for life, in exchange for an agreement that entitles WWYS® the rights to your soul from now until all eternity.

Soul extraction is painless and worry-free. You need never remember your previous soulful existence, and look forward to a “life” of money and security. more

Medical and operant conditioning science has made huge advances in recent years and due to our various strategic partnerships WWYS® is able to identify the genes and lifestyle choices that make up what is commonly referred to as the soul.

Only foolish, ungodly people would deign to barter with the eternal soul. I looked through that site a short time, didn’t want to spend time and energy there, and really do not understand their motive and ultimate goal. I have no desire to pursue it further, and for all I know it may be a spoof. I don’t know.

One thing I surely know–the worth of a soul cannot be computed by human logic or by the highest level of calculation. Each of us is a soul, and we belong to God. When from the eons of eternity He saw that we needed a Redeemer, He took on the form of a man, came to earth as Jesus, and offered Himself as the Supreme Sacrifice. That’s what I know. That’s why when I look at Brandon, I have the understanding that of his worth there can be no calculation.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7

  2. Shirley says:

    Tommyjoe-

Wish you could meet Brandon. He is a jewel. Thanks for your prayers.

The Holy Ghost knows just how to draw each soul. Thank God for this great testimony.
    Blessings

  4. Shirley says:

Ronda, it’s such a valid point to understand that it is the Holy Ghost that draws each one. We cannot do that. We do our part, teach the best we can, but only God draws men.

Hope your weekend is especially blessed.

I agree, Sis. Buxton, it’s priceless.
For each and every single soul that ever lived, lives, and will live, will spend eternity either in heaven or hell. There is no avoiding this truth. Knowing this, how can we do any less than our VERY BEST to introduce people to Jesus – the One and only Saviour of our soul.
    Wonderful post – thank you.

I saw that site, Shirley, it scared me! How could anyone sell his or her soul? Yes, we all belong to God, and no human being can change that fact! We have to pray for those people who have sold their souls to them..

  7. Shirley says:

    TENA and PAULYN

That site is amazing to me, and although I didn’t spend much time there, it seemed to be authentic, but I can’t imagine that anyone would seriously considered selling his/her soul.

We know the soul will live forever…somewhere. God help us to have renewed zeal in order to save those we can.

    Happy Sunday to you both.

Siste Buxton this reminds of me of how I felt shortly before I was baptized in the name of Jesus. God saved my soul. There is no value that can be placed on a soul. Thanks for this post today it was very edifying. On another note I am amazed at how small of a world we live in. I found out that you met one of my cousins in Tucson her name is Ramona Baca. She congregates with Brother Conner. What a small world.

    God Bless
    Daniel

  9. Shirley says:

    Hi, Daniel.

Yes, I did meet your cousin. She is a beautiful, sweet young lady.

Greetings. What an awesome post; both the testiony of a soul now born of the Spirit and of the need for us all to be mindful of the priceless souls that are all around us. Without a doubt, he whom the Son sets free is free indeed.

Have a blessed day in Jesus.

  11. Shirley says:

Thank you, Timbob. It is so true that one soul is worth this whole world.

    Dear Sis. Buxton,

Tell that fantastic flock of yours we said hello! It was so great to see Brandon, Jason and Bro. Buxton at the mens meeting. I am so excited for them. I remember when I began this wonderful journey 20 years ago. To think of where our great God has brought me from and what He yet has in store for me! Excitement boils in my blood. In fact to quote someone famous, “It’s just like fire shut up in my bones!” I get excited to think of what God has in store for the people of His name in Lake Havasu! We love you and your dear, dear people.

    Patrick

  13. Shirley says:

    Hello, Patrick.

We love you back. In an hour and a half, I will see all those dear people and will forward your greetings! Have a great Sunday.
